Grieving is a very personal experience and it is essential to remember that children deal with grief differently from adults.

GRIEF AND LOSS

Emotional loss is not a subject most teachers consider when they go into teaching: It seems better suited to counsellors and parents.  The fact is that children bring their lives with them into the classroom.

As parents and teachers we communicate in subtle ways that a child’s loss is not worthy of a grief response

Some losses young people may encounter

  • death of a beloved pet
  • loss of friendship
  • parental separation
  • moving house
  • changing school
  • transition between classes
  • birth of a sibling
  • loss of possessions
  • broken toys
  • parental imprisonment
  • refugee status
  • illness
  • disability
  • loss of hopes, dreams, innocence, security, selfworth
  • hospitalisation
  • emigration
  • relationship loss
  • being 'looked after'
