The word Mandala is Sanskrit meaning circle.  In the classroom, apart from a great art project, the making of these beautiful pieces helps students recognise each other differents and encourages cooperative learning.  Students can make these individually or collectively.  Students are encouraged to be as creative as possible and express their feelings.

Mandalas are being used to help cooperative learning in a classroom.  To make one of these allows students use self expression which would help in the grieving process

Creating a Group Mandala:
Teaching Unity, not Uniformity

This Collective Quilt Mandala was created by three 5th grade classes at Mt. Erie Elementary School in Anacortes, Washington, USA. This collective art project is a "warm up" exercise used in Mandala Project workshops to introduce students to the idea of joining with others to create something beautiful, as well as practice coloring techniques andcolor theory. It is a wonderful example of art that is created from a central theme, in which artists maintain their individuality while unifying to create something larger than themselves.

The title of the quilt is "Unity, not Uniformity."
